Their story
Thomas, also called Didymus, which means “the Twin,” was one of the Twelve Apostles. The Gospel of John shows us a man who was loyal, honest and not afraid to ask questions. When Jesus decided to return to Judea, where his enemies were waiting, Thomas told the others, “Let us also go, that we may die with him” (John 11:16). At the Last Supper, when Jesus spoke of going to prepare a place for them, Thomas admitted that he did not understand. His question drew from Jesus the beautiful answer, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Thomas is best remembered for his doubt. He was not with the other apostles when the risen Jesus first appeared to them, and he refused to believe unless he could touch the wounds himself. Eight days later Jesus came again and invited Thomas to do just that. Thomas responded with one of the clearest professions of faith in the Gospels: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). In seeing the risen Jesus, he recognized God himself. Ancient tradition holds that Thomas carried the Gospel as far as India, where he was martyred. The St. Thomas Christians of India still honor him as their father in faith.
A prayer for intercession
St. Thomas, you brought your honest questions to Jesus, and he met you with his wounds and his love. Pray for us when we struggle to believe. Help us to bring our doubts to the Lord instead of hiding them, and to trust that he will come to meet us. Lead us deeper into the mystery of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, so that we too may say with all our hearts, “My Lord and my God!” Amen.
